One of the most stunning, beautiful Miyazaki movies in a long time. It definitely wasn't afraid to get weird or gritty with all the birds and alt world building. The editing was the most bizarre element, it kept bouncing around or suddenly transitioning, making me feel like I was having a fever dream. The emotional tone remained consistently somber and reflective thanks to the music and the overall pace.
Probably Cary Grant's most animated performance in a delightful way. Oddly doesn't feel like a Frank Capra flick, probably cause the play script itself focuses on this tug of war between comedy & thriller instead of Americana drama. Because of the genre confusion, the pacing can feel off, making the movie seem longer than it is.
It was definitely a movie, but one that constantly reminded me of other movies. There's technically plot and story progression, but almost no character development. The villain is the most engaging actor. I despised the faded color palette, dark background illuminated by blinding lamps, and the fact I could see the basics of world building but no depth. It's just fine as a space action adventure.
A very heart warming story executed in a very simple way. Almost works as a time capsule showing what the holidays in New York looked like in the 40s. The movie also shows that not much has changed over the decades regarding the commercialism of Christmas and parents' struggles with what to tell their kids about Santa Clause.
