I watched this in Mr. Hambor'f film class. This was the first modern movie we watched (as it was made after the Haze code). I heard this movie was held in great regards but I personally find it overrated. It was reaching too much to have a deeper meaning. And even though it was revolutionary for its time, one of the main female characters (Elaine) had very few lines that were pretty meaningless.
