I can't help but feel like the critical and broader internet culture's positive reception of this movie is just an attempt to give David Zaslav the middle finger rather than a realistic assessment of the movie.   Mormon cinema has lagged behind mainstream cinema for several years now. The cinematography, acting, and writing always floating somewhere around Hallmark and Lifetime content. Watching Lucy and Whitney had me questioning several times has Mormon cinema finally elevated?
  
  The writer/director Parker Gehring and this excellent cast have me hoping it's just around the corner.
