Baker sets up all stereotypical characters and then does nothing interesting with them. They all play out their predictable behaviors, no one is redeemed, and the flaws aren't taken far enough to make a statement or give the film any meaning. Kind of a nothingburger film uncommitted to saying anything or letting characters have multi-dimensional reactions. All the yelling and 'fringe' appeal of uncut gems/good time but with too many drawn out comedy breaks and lazy writing. Performances were mixed, but Mark Eidelstein was great. Kind of a "good enough" movie imo and I'm surprised it won!

Visually beautiful, but the story itself lacks something that most of his other films have. Found the characters unclear and the deep themes of grief not really addressed. My favorite part is the beginning when Mahito goes to a new school, is bullied, misbehaves, hurts himself, and his actions feel grounded in his reality. Most of the rest of the movie is too logic-less to be fully compelling and the character development seemed to stop early on.
