A solid rock doc that tries its damndest to make a simple story out of 30+ years of chaos. While it sidelines a lot of the artists who made GWAR what it is (not even mentioning several of the band members, let alone the behind-the-scenes artists), it handles the Dave Brockie vs Hunter Jackson storyline very well.
There's enough here to appeal to fans of the band, those who've only heard of them through Beavis & Butthead, and those who have…
A lot has changed with GWAR over the last 30+ years, but they continue to slay. Blothar takes on lead vocal duties in this live recording of the 'Scumdogs' album, and does a great job reinterpreting these old classics. His vocal style is less dynamic than that of the late Oderus Urungus, but his ability to enunciate each and every word makes it all infinitely easier to sing along to.
Returning to the band for this anniversary show are old time members Sleazy P. Martini, Slymenstra Hymen, The Sexecutioner, and a meeting of all three Destructos (Techno, Bozo, and Sawborg).
This is, without a doubt, one of the worst movies I've ever seen. And yet, I bought it on Blu Ray. It fascinates me to no end. What was the "crap" that the elderly Barbie bought? Why does Mel Novak look like that now? What was the point of any of this movie?
The concept of this movie far exceeds its execution, but it's still enjoyable enough to warrant a watching. David Dastmalchian does a great job in the lead role, and most of the other actors give good performances as well. The stand-in for James Randi is a bit too on-the-nose, though.
Overall, I think the movie is at its best when it sticks to the conceit that it's an episode of an old late night show. It's at its worst when it goes outside of that (hallucinations? The weird bit at the end? The use of AI "art" in the Johnny Carson era?).
