This film has not aged well. I also hoped for it to be queer. It was not. Makes my stomach churn in the ways it is non consensual, though I understand the purpose in the overall plot.

Night on Earth 1991
This is a beautiful and touching clown story. I cackled so much. Quite tragic too. Beautiful cinematography and incredible writing and acting.

The Tale of The Princess Kaguya 2013
This film unexpectedly shot to the top of my Studio Ghibli list. While I'm not sure anything will ever shake Mononoke, Nausicaa, or Spirited Away (in no particular order), it is certainly my favorite non-Miyazaki-directed Ghibli film.
First off, the art is absolutely stunning, completely different from anything I've ever seen, and even within Kaguya's particular style, there are wonderful variations to fit the mood in different scenes. The flexibility is amazing.

Sometimes it really worked for me and sometimes it didn't. The characters felt too self aware and were able to say just the right thing in a way that felt inauthentic to me. I also couldn't tell if they were making fun of Hallmark movies or trying to BE a Hallmark movie or both, and I think clarity there would've helped me.
The moments that did work worked wonders. The sex scenes were all hilarious. Some of the longer jokes…
