Both the anime and manga beautifully capture the wonder of chance encounters, the messiness of young adult life and the sacrifices people make in relationships. For me, what makes Nana so special and timeless is that every character is nuanced, flawed, self-aware and human. From the emotions they feel to the kind of thoughts they have, I see parts of myself in Ai Yazawa’s characters and my judgement of their individual choices keeps changing over time.
