The ghostly lingering pans lull us into a voyeurism that transcends character. We feel as if we’ve watched this story play out 8000 times before. It’s a story of fire and ice and how Hae Sung and Nora, like water, timelessly ebb and flow.

All Quiet on the Western Front 2022
I would like to spend some time figuring out why so many book adaptations have this strange pulse, like the scene where Franz goes and talks to the girls across the farm. There’s nothing wrong with it but you can tell it works better in a scene from a book. Transposing that pace and reflection onto the screen is evidently hard and I understand the challenge is getting the internal monologue external, but that’s simply (and I’m not being dramatic)…
