An animated film that strives and prides itself on being different from the rest. A children’s movie parodying others and even fairy tales. A huge stepping stone for all animation, specifically western.

A wonderfully whimsical, heartfelt tragedy.
This film does something I’ve never actually seen done properly: make an innocent character seem genuinely innocent. Setsuko is one of the sweetest and cutest characters you can imagine and she’s in a horrific war story that’s not scared to be blunt and brutal.
To be honest, their whole dynamic has been done to bits but no where near as emotional or impactful as this. Seita, even though he’s Setsuko’s carer, is still just a…
