    Blink Twice

The irony of this movie attempting to take on the patriarchy and wealthy, powerful men, but failing to realize that the root problem is the existence of capitalism. So close!

  • The Substance

    The Substance

The Substance is effective as a body horror film and an indictment of patriarchal beauty norms, including the role of women in perpetuating harm. It’s designed to be nasty and over the top, but I do wish there was more subtlety to the script than the billboard/poster device which is way overplayed here.

    MaXXXine

I wanted a steamy slasher, I got a mild thriller about televangelists instead. I’m struggling to understand why this needed to be made and what Ti West and Mia Goth hoped to achieve. It’s not totally boring, but it’s underwritten and underwhelming. It’s also unwilling to show any restraint or let the audience think at all, from frequent flashbacks to a climax that literally takes place at the Hollywood sign. I’ll be rewatching to make sure, but right now I fear Maxxxine is shallow and extraneous.

    Talk to Me

Do filmmakers actually think they’re original when they turn in another horror script full of jumpscares and metaphors for grief? This is getting ridiculous at this point. If you’ve seen The Babadook and Hereditary, you’ve seen them all. Talk to Me is just as derivative and boring as the rest of the imitating crowd, replete with cardboard cutout characters and a slightly promising but underwhelming gimmick. The greatest offense is the film’s painting of a masculine figure in a dress as creepy and sinister. Given the recent peaks in transphobic and TERF rhetoric, this is especially dangerous. Two hands down for Talk to Me.
