    How do you visualize a memory?

    At the SCAD Savannah Film Festival, I was privileged to catch a screening of Nickel Boys-- and boy, was it a fantastic watch! Visually intimate, using first-person perspective to give the sense of watching the memories of the two leads from their own eyes. The manner in which it distorts a lot of lines; between characters, between past and present, between fiction and reality (because Nickel Academy isn't real, but the Dozier School for Boys was). Time moves onward, but trauma remains.

    A wonderful film, one I can't recommend enough.

    Watching the two leads converse on screen was honestly enthralling. The lead actor during the Q&A after the film at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival brought up My Dinner with Andre as a comparison, and I can definitely see the comparison! Seeing the two leads disagree but also converse on a variety of topics while slowly opening up to one another was honestly fun to watch; the camera also felt very personal and intimate, and it felt often times like…

    As a standalone work, I think it could have done more! The cinematography was fantastic, but I would have liked to get to know the characters more since it feels like I was plopped into the climax of a much longer film. If that longer film ever does get made, I’d definitely love to see it!
