Memories of Murder 2003
this is one of the most frustrating watches ever in a good way. the film has such a cruel sense of humour as well as irony. he makes a great case for modernity throughout the film just to spit in our faces in the end. comedy blends into horror into tragedy. there’s something poetic about this film. this is probably bong joon ho’s best work if not solely because it all seems to work.

mortality is such a terrifying thing to think about. in this doc, it doesn’t come as an imposing, menacing threat. rather, it comes as an sweet old lady in the twilight of her years. it disarms you with her warm, gentle smile, then slowly, it creeps up on you and delivers a gut punch of reality.
