emotionally poignant, but never indulgent, this film with it's picturesque frames contrasting the unspeakable truths within really soars loved it. Called my cousin not soon after watching. Hosting his fam for Shabbat next Friday :)

Came cause it was on Scorsese’s list. Stayed for mind altering mid film dance sequence. Incredible.

Hugh Grant brings the charm with a villainous undertow in this 3/4 baked genre film. Thoughtful commentary on the nature of religion/control throughout, as well as fine perfs by our three actors in basically a unit set soundstage fright fest. Props to the sound an art departments, as well as the score.

masterful film. thx Criterion! Kobayashi and Hashimoto (script) deliver an anti authoritarian gem in set in 1630 Japan with vigor and tenacity. The showdown at the end is worth the price of admission.
