  Park Chan-wook threads a deft stylistic needle with this film that’s a much more absorbing portrait of Ill-fated romance than either a criminal procedural or suspense thriller. The comedy relief is a bit strained and it leaves a few too many screws insufficiently tightened.  Park and his creative team skitter across the story, nimbly but at times too elliptically. The leads Park Hae-il and Tang Wei are magnificent when sharing the screen m, less so when separated - fittingly, perhaps..…

  Sciamma’s lovingly hauntingly depicted bridging of time between mothers and daughters. The temporally linked young women are  portrayed with thoughtfulness and patience by the Sanz sisters.

  A wonderfully grounded family drama fights with meta and multi flights of fancy that can and do wear out their welcome. The precision and commitment of Yeoh bolsters the film through its rockier (ha!) stretches and helps counter a tendency to overdo things for the sake of not-always-charming maximilism.
