Anderson seamlessly blends deadpan humor with a dogged insistence that his characters' absurd love story be taken seriously.

The very real emotions mix perfectly with the very funny subject matter, and the quirky director's endlessly charming portrayal of both makes this film not only Anderson's best, but one of my all-time favorite films.

    "Perfect, genuine, complete, crystalline, pure."

The best words to describe this film can be found within Kurtz's own monologue. Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece achieves a glorious majesty through total chaos and sheer, frenzied violence.

The use of color and darkness are hauntingly gorgeous and effective. Sheen's persistent thousand yard stare feels somehow like more than an act. This film is probably one of the greatest of all time.

This is very very bad, mostly because it thinks it's very good.

The script is awful, the characters are basically non-existent, the plot doesn't make much sense, and there are a few super trashy twists thrown in for no apparent reason.

    And the fucking narration.

Clive Owen narrates literally every thing his character does in third person. The idea is that he's supposed to be narrating a book with himself as the main character, but not only does this make no sense within the context of the movie, it's also unbelievably annoying and eye-rollingly overused.

This is just bad all the way through.

Excellent exploration of identity, oppression, suppression, expectation, and duty. This is truly phenomenal, and makes all kinds of complex statements about performance, character acting, and all kinds of other shit.

For me it was most profound as an exploration of self identity as it relates and conflicts with others' conflicting expectations of us.

Was Beth ever really a complete person? Was Nina? Thomas at one point says that everything Beth did came from a deep internal place within herself, but…
