  West Side Story 1961

  “All of you! You all killed him! And my brother, and Riff. Not with bullets, or guns, with hate.”

  West Side Story left me with mixed feelings. I adored its use of color, be it costume design or lightning, which becomes so vibrant thanks to the gorgeous technicolor look and accentuated almost every scene. On the other hand, the film felt lengthy, besides a few songs, most didn’t resonate with me, and those gangs felt more childlike than dangerous, mostly due to their comical behavior. It was, however, a pleasant surprise to spot Ben Horne and Dr. Jacoby as leaders of the Jets.

  „It doesn't matter if you win or lose, it's what you do with your dancin' shoes.“

  Grease delivers when it comes to a musical’s most vital element: the songs and choreographies. The catchy songs with their fitting dance numbers pave the way for a light-hearted, melodramatic teenage romance film. The fact that none of the actors look anything like a teenager may be offsetting at first but doesn’t matter in the bigger picture as Grease is more of a feeling than an actual story.
