Cinema is like... everything!
This is the first film by writer and director Pedro AlmodΓ³var. Made during a time of shifting cultural expression and freedom it is very loose and comical, free, and encompasses a lot of pop culture as well as elements of other filmmakers like John Waters. He would go on to make more polished films, even within the zany and sexual comedies but this rough film still showcases the talent and the vision that would go on to define him.

When I heard about the existence of this film back when it premiered, I wasn't too interested in this. Then people started talking about how good it is and I was intrigued. Then I saw Taylor Tomlinson talking obsessively about it and I decided to watch it. Oh good lord! How incredible, how utterly devastating, depressing and emotionally wrecking.
Frances McDormand... such brilliance. Olive Kitteridge is a complicated and multi-faceted character. Bitter but not an evil person. Hard to love but even harder to hate. McDormand nails it, her performance is one of the best to come out in recent years. Probably her career best effort.
