I recently watched a silent film (King Vidor’s The Crowd) and it made me appreciate silent movies so much.  I had only seen one Keaton film before this one (The General) and was enraptured by Keaton’s ingenuity, bravery, and comical genius.  This was as good, if not better than General.  The level of creativity and imagination for 1924 was off the charts.  It’s truly remarkable that a film over a hundred years old can still hold up so well.  I really enjoyed this - the story, the stunts, the humor, the pathos.  Keaton was a genius.

This is not one of Hitchcock’s better films but it contains enough Hitchcockian conventions and themes to keep it engaging. Dietrich was magnetic and ravishingly beautiful (as always) but the bigger flaw with this film was the casting - Wyman was miscast as well as her lover. The screenplay just wasn’t that compelling - a mediocre effort from the master of suspense .

Credit must also go to Mortenson - he did a commendable job on his sophomore directorial effort. A lot of credit must also go to his…

By my assessment, there were ten films better than this from 2017. But 2017 was an exceptional year for cinema. That doesn’t mean this wasn’t a good film but it certainly wasn’t exceptional nor worthy of a Best Picture award. However, it did convince me that Del Toro is a great filmmaker and his best work is yet to come.

The other thing I came to appreciate is Richard Jenkins as one of the most underappreciated character actors of his…
