    Boy, was this a frustrating experience. Arguably Hitchcock’s least-admired silent picture—and perhaps his least-admired film full stop—this is a nonsense concoction about a rich girl whose father decides to teach her a lesson when he gets angry about her choice of paramours. The story is completely lacking in believable motivations, stakes or character investment. Hitchcock would later say that there was no script and it was made up the whole way through. That checks out.

    Ah, the virtue of low expectations. Of all my Hitchcock blind spots, this is the one I was least looking forward to. All I knew about this largely forgotten 1934 film was that it’s a biopic of Johann Strauss II, and it’s often cited as one of Alfred Hitchcock’s worst directorial efforts. I despise mediocre biopics, and certainly don’t enjoy seeing a director I love fail at his craft, so I really had to brace myself for this one.
