This is a low-budget film about a lottery winner who lost all her winnings (true story). To be honest, this was never on my watchlist. I only heard about it because of the controversy that erupted surrounding the unexpected Academy Award nomination of Andrea Riseborough as best actress. IMHO the acting by Riseborough is definitely worthy of the nomination. By the end of the film, I was crying - moved by the story. I haven’t felt that emotional connection and investment in a character a long time.

The Fabelmans 2022
What I loved: The behind the scene view of how our protagonist made his movies. I loved the family storyline and journey. What was meh: Don’t hate me, but the mother story line was too long. It’s almost as though Spielberg couldn’t be objective enough to edit the parent journey down. Definitely a fine movie for a movie night at home. But not great enough for an Academy Award movie.

TÁR 2022
Cate Blanchett was so amazing, I honestly thought this was based on a real-life conductor. I am not a music geek, but I actually found myself agreeing with her “lectures.”. I loved the concept of taking the foundation of what you learn and using it as a way of reinventing yourself - despite your possible disdain for the work. I found it an interesting take of the resilience of the human spirit. (My only hope - which we are not given a glimpse to, is that Tar grew from the lessons that brought her to where she was at the end of the movie.)
