    Pride and Prejudice

    This is kind of an odd adaptation because they truncate the romance and the scandal with Lydia while enlarging the role of Lady Catherine de Bourgh, seemingly in order to better showcase Edna May Oliver.

    It's hard to object to more Edna May Oliver, but it's also not what someone is hoping to find when seeking out a Jane Austen adaptation, unless that someone is one of the two old queens who've just got a minute to catch up.

    I've been on a losing streak with these screwball comedies. Despite an S-Tier cast (Irene Dunne; Alice Brady and Jean Dixon from My Man Godfrey; actual Lucille Ball) by the halfway point I was starting to hope this was one of those movies that suddenly turns tragic midway through.

    Sadly, not enough of the film still exists to get even that basic story across, but it's still a fascinating glimpse of early 20th century Brazil.
