The Boy and the Heron 2023
Although this review comes months after I actually saw the film, I still maintain my strong criticisms. This film boasts spectacular animation and a wonderful opening sequence. Unfortunately, as its runtime progresses it becomes too unfocused and bloated, while simultaneously obsessed with ticking typical Ghibli-isms off a list. A disappointing film, unworthy of the massive hype it has received.

Absolutely fantastic film. You know a movie’s doing something right when you get more excited about physicist cameos than the newest Marvel announcement (although admittedly this is easier than ever to do at the moment). The music is perfect and the cast is acting at their strongest the whole way through. Just saw it a second time today. Absolutely fantastic. Loved the unintentional juxtaposition of Marvel/TDK-style camp with an otherwise very serious movie about physicists, most notably present in a certain name drop towards the end and Einstein (iykyk).
