A complex depiction of family mixed with courtroom drama is a recipe for success—an excellent pairing of Robert Downey Jr and Robert Duvall— creating a truly dynamic performance. The movie is well-written and enjoyable to watch (several laugh-out-loud moments). Giving a robust and interesting story about family, regrets, and the moments that shape us. It does suffer from a somewhat unoriginal premise that being a father-son storyline while hinting at other issues along the way. I have honestly watched this movie several times and will again it really is well crafted.
(a note before my synopsis: this movie is slow, do prepare yourself for it; you have to look for the subtext throughout the film through visuals and dialogue) Aftersun is a thoughtful meditation on the perseverance of those with mental health disorders and the reality they live. The movie masterfully manipulates the main charters through the use of flashbacks, flashforwards, and visual depictions of one's mental status. The movie uses multiple techniques to address love, sadness, instability, and much more.…
