Tokyo Godfathers 2003
a film all about empathising with others no matter how they might seem to us on the surface. saw this at an MAF screening and Steve Henderson’s introduction was on point - this film being animated is necessary for us to really connect with the characters. i see parts of the people around me so clearly in Miyuki, Hana, and Gin in a way that i haven’t felt for a while. for such a simple film (particularly when looking at Kon’s other work) we dig so deeply into these characters that my biggest takeaway was the amount of personality shining through.

First Reformed 2017
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
i love the building anticipation that’s underneath the whole time whilst it still manages to maintain a relative peacefulness, a reflection of reverend toller’s feelings throughout the film. constant rumbling beneath the surface which culminates in a confused and ill-thought out action because toller is not a perfect man and he doesn’t have a perfect answer; first reformed tell us we’re too far past the point of no return to figure out that answer now. all we can ask is, ‘will god forgive us?’.
