You find more moral weight in an rerun of Law and Order than you do in this sham

If this doesn’t entirely cohere, it’s a result of Bonello’s ambition to map out emotional landscapes across the three time periods that resist easy interpretation. It's also hard not to be flabbergasted by the ambition on display. But despite all this, I couldn’t help but feel that the film, for all its audacity, remains curiously distant. The emotional dislocation that Bonello so expertly crafts throughout never quite finds its counterpoint in genuine feeling, despite working like a charm in the 2014 L.A. section (without a doubt, the best part of the film).

Think Zombieland, less Nocturama, and add a dash of Jamesian existential dread.

Pseudo-realism posturing as high-art. The worst type of "social" cinema, if you can even call it that—and I would understand if people were to deem it flat out exploitative.

    ★½

Teems with snide self-aggrandizement and a horrific sense of privilege. It's emotionally manipulative to the point of being unwatchable. It's not only the octopus that's being objectified for emotional self-satisfaction here—it's his poor son too, to whom he "dedicates" this steaming pile of nonsense.
