Some credit can be given to the DOP and production team for this film's fantastic look. Some. The writer however? Nope. This film is two hours of gruelling 'social realism' in air quotes because this film entirely lacks any commentary on it at all. Slurs are used, women are raped, and gay characters are labelled villains. The character that does all these things is the *protagonist* to whom not an ounce of humility is given. Unless you can detach yourself wholly from an analytical film experience, DO NOT WATCH THIS FILM!
Fun and entertaining, yet it feels like there's only half a film here. The other half is the bad guy *just* getting away in time to add another 10 minutes to the runtime. All for Jamie Lee Curtis shooting up bad guys tho.
A delightful experience of fanciful setting and pantomime evil. A film that blends together the art of character acting with stunning production and witty writing so sharp it cuts through any critique of historical accuracy anyone may have.

As a film... visually breathtaking yet narratively forgettable. As a film adaptation of my absolute favourite book of all time... woefully disappointing. Perhaps it's just how close I am with the source material or maybe I'm just cynical, but this film devoted nowhere near as much time to the more important characters as it did to ensuring Peter Jackson's name was bright and shiny on the packaging. Slimming had to be done, but what was slimmed confuses me. And don't get me started on Hester's Scar.
