I thought this mostly pretty good. It was disturbing, thrilling, ambiguous, and mysterious through out the entire run. I thought that it did a great job at keeping me guessing as to where it was going. What it missed me though is that I am not entirely sure what the film was trying to say outside the context of the film itself. It felt like there was a greater message it wanted to send but I am a bit lost on what that intention was.

While the animation can sometimes be dazzling in its psychedelia, I don't think there is much substance here. Even the recobbled edition feels hollow. It's kind of a shame because I do think there is something to be admired in one man's life long dedication to this singular project, but unfortunately it just didn't really materialize into anything great.

I appreciated the meta analysis the movie contains. It raised a discussion on the nature of film as the platform to analyze tragedy; and whether that process is fundamentally exploitative or not. I think this self awareness is key to the film and was brought forward in a pretty original way.

I like everyone involved in this remake, but holy shit does it suck. The pacing is atrocious, the plot is incomprehensible, the acting is wooden, and the direction is filled with all sorts of tonal whiplash. I don't know what the hell happened during the making of this movie. It was just a bad movie.
