A very poor man's The Irishman
Even the best scene, the killing of Anastasia, was done better in The Irishman. Felt like one of those museum movies, but stretched out to over two hours. If I saw this in the Mob museum in Las Vegas, I wouldn't bat an eyelid.
A film about the porno industry perhaps shouldn't be so likeable or easy to watch but I was immediately drawn to PTA's early career hit. I think its incredible that someone in their 20's could direct something like this, being their second feature film no less. Scorsese's last word on the gangster film is an epic finale and an obituary for the 'Frank Sheeran' type of mob men in American society. By the end of the film the Irishman, has nothing and no one, and while he's never imprisoned for the worst crime, his loneliness and irrelevance to society is his punishment.
