*sigh* this made me hate Eddie Murphy more than I already do. Just no. I’m embarrassed for the whole cast quite honestly. And no, I did not watch this in it’s entirety. I’m embarrassed to be Black watching this 😂
Uglies falls into the well-trodden territory of dystopian cinema, offering little new to the genre. This film attempts a sci-fi spin on the classic adage, "beauty is only skin deep," but its execution leaves much to be desired. The CGI, while ambitious, often feels more corny than immersive. The film’s sci-fi elements might have been more effective with a subtler approach, which could have enhanced the overall narrative rather than overshadowing it.

This movie highlighted the mundanes and mental exhaustion of dealing with racism on a micro level. It showcased how some of us choose to both consciously and subconsciously cope with micro aggressions and every day racism.
The intertwining of dark humor and satire made this watch a little lighter. Still touching on very real subjects but not using “oppression porn” and sensationalism to depict racism and oppression, the idea of “small scale racism” isn’t often used in media. We see…
