A dystopian coming-of-age that successfully subverts cliche expectations and depicts the origin of Panem’s ruthless President Snow through a saddening love story.
This film is a fair translation of its book counterpart and also breathes new life into a now aged and mundane Hunger Games film franchise.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 2024
An adorable family film with some genuine laughs for kids and adults. The third sonic movie continues the franchise’s successful run on the silver screen. The same colorful cast of characters gains favorable new additions and concludes this trilogy with a nice bow while also leaving Sonic’s future open-ended.
I only wish this movie had a slightly longer runtime as some impactful scenes feel rushed and are easily covered up by some of the movies brilliant, but numerous action scenes.

The Holdovers 2023
I nice Christmas story about three very different individuals that find common ground in one another, and develop a strong family dynamic while stuck at a preparatory school for the holidays.
This film does an excellent job with character development and examines how the holidays feel to those who’ve experienced loss. To see these characters develop over the course of the narrative while the overall christmas theme takes a backseat gives a refreshing twist on the reason for the season.

Fun yet predictable. I feel like it struggles to find its audience. Good performances from the actors, but some roles feel under-utilized. Full of cliche “santa movie” tropes, but also experiments with some fresh twists and concepts.
Nice for the holidays, but not something I’d watch as a yearly christmas classic.
