  This is kind of like if you stepped into Street Fighter 4 in 2008. And then you stepped back out and it had the ambient cultural zeitgeist of 2008. The choreography was really amazing, particularly the chocolate warehouse and the final battle, but oh my lord, the premise of this movie is dated.

  I was absolutely beaming through most of this movie. Hariyama-san is my guy! I nearly cried when he popped in his first cassette tape and "Pale Blue Eyes" by VU started playing, a man of my exact sensibilities.

  In 2019 I visited Tokyo for the first time, and I was a bit repulsed by the Tokyo Sky Tree, which finished construction that decade. I wrote an instagram post about it! Here,

  Richard Jewell 2019

  Richard Jewell's lawyer has a poster they display prominently throughout the movie that reads, "I fear the government more than terrorism." Eastwood spends the duration of the film antagonizing the government and the media writ large, across from a lovable rube for the audience to rally around. Multiple audience members at my showing guffawed at the FBI or the reporter each time the film goaded them to react. This is a little something for those with Fox News brain.
