Aniara is an absolute gut-punch. I expected it to be existential, but this is one of the bleakest films I’ve ever seen. I genuinely have nothing to compare it to. What makes it so effective is how emotionally grounded it is. Monster is a visually stunning look at the tenderness and brutality of boyhood through the lens of a mother, a child, and a teacher. It’s not the kind of story that’s going to hold your hand, but it will kiss you on the forehead before it goes, and that will be enough.
A super underrated and under-marketed movie. The tone is weird, but in a good way? Especially if you’re an artist, I highly recommend Landscape with Invisible Hand. Big themes of art, love, beauty, conformity, pride, and the rapid commodification of everything.
