    Needless to say, my expectations of this film were very high, both based on seeing Farhadi's previous work and, of course, the Oscar.

    However, the film is inherently problematic. There is an interesting, challenging film lying somewhere in this narrative - the unspeakability of rape in Iran; sexual violence; women who get dubbed prostitutes because of the rumours in their building; and, indeed, male privilege.

    The Salesman does not go there. Instead, it focuses on the impotence of the man…
