    The Substance

A powerful and eternally relevant message combines with jaw-dropping (and stomach churning) practical effects to deliver on a sobering film experience. The issues this film addresses with vanity, self sabotage, and how the world values women are not new topics, but seeing them artfully portrayed through a heightened, sci-fi lens was particularly effective. I look forward to seeing what the auteur Coralie Fargeat cooks up next.

    Heretic

    ★★★½

I put this movie on on a whim to see if it could hold my interest and finished the whole thing. Theological discussions have always piqued my interest depending on the open-mindedness of the parties participating. Setting this topic in a horror aesthetic allows for the back-and-forth to pull no punches and push points across in dramatic fashion. There are also enough surprises for me to respect the script and not feel the need to browse YouTube or watch a few episodes of anime instead. The Heretic didn’t blow my mind or shake me to my core, but I don’t regret my time with it.

    Paddington in Peru

    ★★★½

Just like any sensible adult, I use the children in my life as a cover to watch kids movies. The Paddington series is perhaps the highest quality entry for that category of film in recent years. The first two stunned me with their charm and wit, and I kept my expectations at basement-level going into Paddington in Peru once I learned Paul King didn’t return to write and direct. However, the creative team behind the (red) cap on this trilogy manage to follow the formula enough to deliver on an enjoyable experience nonetheless. Paddington in Peru is not great, but it is good.

  • The Monkey

    The Monkey

    ★★½

The Monkey is shot beautifully with creative visuals and excellent sound design. However, it’s stupidly written, and even when elements of dark humor and over-the-top gore work well singularly, they add up to a confused experience that falls flat on its furry face.
