Gorgeously gothic film that captures that specific aesthetic better than any other film I’ve seen. Every frame was a painting. Extremely engaging and nearly perfect first half.

A lot of disappointment afterwards - Willem Dafoe’s character created too much comic relief, almost single-handedly clashing with the tone of the entire film up to his introduction. In contrast to Eggers’ masterful debut film, there was so much horribly drawn-out exposition dump. Nosferatu’s design was extremely underwhelming, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s performance was very out of place.

Lacked the punch I thought this would bring, and fizzled out anti-climatically. Did not seem there was necessarily a point to it all, besides fulfilling a fantasy. The power play, specifically with gender roles and subservience hinted at something deeper when it came to the assistant’s disappointment in her boss’s morality, and also ironically, the use of the situation to serve herself. A lot of the same praise that is going to Demi Moore for her performance in The Substance should also go to Nicole Kidman for similar reasons.

If you were forced to relive the last moments of your life over and over again, would you spend that time fighting the end or welcome it with the people you love?

Conceptually, “The Vat of Acid Episode” of Rick and Morty and the film Palm Springs execute this same concept with better results. It takes…

    SXSW #17:

Initially crafted as a stage play, this very much feels like it was meant for a theater. This is a film that throws a bunch of rich LA types into a fancy house mixed with an unexpected wandering visitor and lets the drama unfold. It was an interesting perspective into how motherhood can completely disrupt a life path, and a window into the harshness of an industry that chews and spits out women. I’m not sure that this kind of film was meant for me, but it seemed to resonate with some of the crowd my girlfriend and I saw it with.
