A minimalist masterpiece. Intense and concentrated. And an architect, the most measured of the 12 angry men, as it’s white knight in a white suit.
Lumet, in his first feature, exhibits a mastery of the essence of filmmaking (blocking and framing) while teasing out intelligent storytelling (acting and dialogue). Overall, succinct and compelling.
Very Indian and energetic with a few great needle drops. But I had two problems: will the camera ever stop moving and why did they have to spell it out. There was a heavy handed use of flashbacks. It was also insanely violent. Sat in the front row, I felt like the blood was gonna splat all over me.
Painful. Everyone in it is unravelling, her especially.
Once again the visuals were great. Take me to Jordan! And the emperor (Christopher Walken playing Christopher Walken) living in Carlo Scarpa’s Tomba Brion was a nice touch (and helped them feel very Roman). On the luminescent infrared Giedi Prime Lady Margaux (Parisian Léa Sedoux) looks like she wears Alaïa (whose distilled Arab influences mirror Dune’s). The Fremen felt one part Pharaoh-worshipping Ancient Egyptians and another Afghans hiding in the caves warring with the Baron Vladimir-led Soviet/Harkonnens.
