The Avenger is fun. That is the encompassing word for it. It is really, really, really fun.
Joss Whedon is an expert in making really fun stuff (or rather, that is what he lures you in with until you love all his characters which he then proceeds to kill off horribly while he laughs evilly and twirls his mustache. But that is not the point right now.) Anyway, often moviemakers do not understand the correct sort of fun for a…
This is an absolutely brilliant movie. It manages to be both funny and actually kind of brutal at the same time and it has a great premise. As usual, Joss is at his best when takes clichés and turns them on their head and horror is so obviously a genre he knows and loves.
The movie also feels like an episode of one of Joss Whedon’s shows but I will not say which. Honestly, this is a move that you should know as little as possibly about when you watch it.
Go watch it! All the love!
I find that this move got much better when I invented new names for the characters and stopped trying to think about them as Holmes and Watson. Because seriously, this has very little to with the original characters. It had some very nice effects and Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr are lovely but that is about it. I have this crazy idea that a Sherlock Holmes movie should involve something like, you know, a lot of mysteries and deduction. Luckily, the writers cleverly disguised the lack of anything mysterious or deductive with a lot of explosions. Yay.
