The Substance started out with an interesting premise. Really liked the way Elizabeth spiralled into madness and this was excellently depicted by Demi Moore. The special effects were also very well done up until the last third of the film where all of it falls apart. The ending takes a bizarre turn that feels out of sync with the rest of the movie and the blood-fest at the end felt very cheap and like something out of a Scary Movie,…
Don’t be afraid to tell grandpa that your daughter likes girls - seems to be the profound philosophical message of this overly long snoozfest.
The parody and humour starts out strong and is as witty as ever in the first 15 or so minutes - after which the film reuses some forced jokes over and over again to the point where it becomes frustrating.
I probably really enjoyed it in another universe.
Pros:
- Pitt’s and Robbie’s acting is phenomenal
- 20s swing music blasting and carrying through the narrative
- Colour symbolism
Cons:
- Way too long and exhausting, barely any downtime
- The last 30-45 minutes don’t really serve any narrative purpose (starting with Nellie’s night visit to Manny)
