When I read the book back in 2019, the narrative perspective trick didn’t work for me. It felt a little too contrived. This film takes what I thought was a weakness and turns it into a strength. This is a rare adaptation that is better than the book.

This movie literally has Looney Tunes levels of violence and also wants to say something serious about generational trauma. It almost works.

This feels more like Luis Bunuel and Yorgos Lanthimos than it does Guy Maddin, but it’s operating on a wavelength that totally tickles my brain. It’s so rare to sit in a theatre and laugh with people whose brains are weird in the same way yours is.

I don’t know how to put a star rating on this thing. There’s hardly a moment in it that’s boring. I was thoroughly entertained, just at the sheer audacity of it. I laughed a lot, but it’s hard for me to tell if I was laughing at things that are intentionally funny. It’s philosophically muddled, but also very sincere about what it thinks it’s trying to say. It’s simultaneously one star and five stars.
