It needed more corporate satire and less horror. There were a few shots that tried to make it scary but ended up being funny because unicorns are inherently silly.
The movie spent so much time making Paul Rudd completely scummy that you don’t want him to have a redemption arc, so the ending is tedious.
Not that the plot of the original movie had aged well, but the rewrites felt so corporatized and soulless. The whole third act was completely dumb.
It is so disheartening that Disney would rather spend tens of millions of dollars on animating the dwarves than hiring actual actors.
Gal Gadot hammed it up but she wasn’t given enough to do.
The attempt at satire was so forced and blunt that it was hard to sit through. Mark Ruffalo especially was cringe. It completely distracted from any good sci-fi themes about individuality and the soul. Joon Ho is no Asimov or Bradbury.
The colonialism themes were also painful to sit through. It too was blunt and felt detached from actual decolonization activism.
The tone was very all over the place. I guess that was what they were going for, but the ending seemed a bit too much like the director trying to make a point rather than a cohesive story.
