Okay listen. I know this movie is plagued by questionable camera work, inconsistent pacing, and terrible acting. But it is super clear to me that this is someone’s passion project, and that goes a long way toward me overlooking some of the flaws. I can absolutely see the vision, and the concept is super cool. The lake, built over the ruins of a once-thriving Black city, destroyed by racism and lies, is surely haunted. And those ghosts clamoring for revenge,…
This powerful film showcases the ride of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, as told through the eyes of a young, idealistic Scottish doctor who finds himself entangled in the inner circle of the regime.
Though James McAvoy’s character wasn’t exactly a real person, he was based on experiences of a couple real life people, and is a really interesting lens from which to view these horrors.
The performances here were all strong, but Forest Whitaker really nailed it. He made my skin crawl, even while (or should I say, especially when) acting joyfully.
Terrific film, though difficult to watch, for obvious reasons.
Definitely better than I expected it to be. I’m not sure how often I’ll rewatch (it’s likely to be a decade movie for me), but honestly, not nearly as bad as I had feared.
Gap Gadot’s incredibly campy performance really sold me. I love a real over-the-top villain. And Rachel’s Snow was sweet and strong at the same time. The ‘Whistle While You Work’ and outdoor yodel party sequences were a perfect match of classic and updated, and spectacularly fun…
All the hallmarks of a classic Disney Channel Original Movie. This one absolutely SCREAMS 2001 in the best way. The spiky hair, the wide jeans, the iMacs in the computer lab. Love love love.
Timothy O’Mundson KILLS in this role and you can tell he’s having the most awesome time.
The plot is silly and super fun. Literally, why they couldn’t just say, you’re Irish, without having to say, o and you’re a leprechaun, I’ll never know. Every one of them looks Irish plain as day. But, the silliness adds to the charm.
‘My father’s from Cleveland’ - this line never gets old.
