Nosferatu 2024
I’m a sucker for folk horror and the set, costumes and fx deserve all the awards. Ultimately I thought it was a well cast retelling of Dracula… more re-TELLING than re- IMAGINING… orlak delivered for sure, but story-wise, I found nothing particularly unpredictable about it. I personally enjoyed how artfully over the top and unhinged all the actors, specifically Lily. Hard to attach to Aaron Tylor Johnson’s character though (kinda felt like an snl skit no?)

Leave the World Behind 2023
Mr. Esmail is consistent with his world making! Like a little open faced dollhouse with tiny people coming to grips with never having been in control. Gotta love those dramatic zoom-ins a la 70s crime drama, or the topsy turvy rotating lenses that melt all balance and make you wonder if you’re even hear watching a movie or just a child in some alternate reality devouring a comic strip.
