First and foremost, I enojyed the film for its portrayal of the relationship between the main couple - the lack of communication that step after step led from a little misunderstanding to the fall of the whole relationship and in the end to a tragic ending.

I also admired Lang's character who while the others (like the producer and screen writer) tried to bring Odyssey down to Earth and closer to each other, was the only one thinking in a bigger scale and understood that Odyssey was above such petty problems that the screen writer and producer where dealing with.

I liked it. It was a good movie. My favourite detail - superb management of the audiences emotions (i.e. SPOILERS scene when Jack sees the sky for the first time and is in awe with it for a while or a scene in a police car when the mom finally comes out toghether with the policeman).

I also liked that the story was not hollywoodised and kept its integrity without any additional hyperbolised issues.

All in all, I understand why some movie goers where fast to claim that this was the best movie of the year.

This was the first pre-Godfather movie that so closely resembled the Godfather itself. Wonderfull Lancaster's character, beautiful cinematography and marvelous Delon and Cardinale.

I would be greatly surprised if Coppola or his team has not seen this movie befored directing the Godfather.

This was the second Mizoguchi film that I have seen (the first one being Ugetsu). It only reconfirmed that the director was into creating dark films. I liked Sansho and found it a bit more conventional compared to Ugetsu. This should not be understood neither as a slight nor a praise. In the end I would slightly prefer Ugetsu due to its masterful treatment of mystery and dream-like setting.
