the shoestring budget and mockumentary format really prevented this from being as visceral as it could be; there’s no sense of scope with regards to either the compound or the coerced poisoning of its residents.

still, there’s a The Knife needle drop and amy seimetz is always good.

    The Little Mermaid

    ★★★

warm, earthy colors proliferate through this faithful telling of the hans christian andersen masterpiece. they’re often paired with genuinely stunning 2d designs of seashell castles and sunlit forests that simultaneously reference golden age storybook illustrations and 1970s animated surrealism.

it’s the little mermaid, so of course it’s heartbreaking, but unfortunately the climax of the story isn’t given the same amount of time or gravitas as the rest of it.

still, it’s got such a distinct visual style and commitment to the source material that it’s worth your time.

(and a richard chamberlain narration! fairy tale lovers always win)

the fat girl experience— rife with unflinching vulnerability, self-loathing, and despair. it dares to be horny and bitter and conflicted in ways that a lot of fêted “good for her” movies avoid. laura galán is fearless in her performance as sara, and carlota pereda’s direction is gutting.
