The reconstructed 1998 version of this film is one of my favorites of all time. Unfortunately although many of the elements I loved in that version were still there, the theatrical cut shown today was disappointing and by comparison suffers uneven pacing and a somewhat disjointed plot. Universal rather butchered this one in the edit, and it’s a shame it took so long for Welles’ vision, famously outlined in his 58-page memo, to reach the screen.
