In a risky but ultimately succesful move the sets (both stylized/formal and naturalistic, both claustrophobic and nightmarish) and lighting imitate but never ape the painter's style, and I guess the way the camera never moves imitates...the experimence of looking at a painting? The dialogue is great even when it's not supposed to be, but I don't feel I ultimately really got much out of the characterization. And then there's the real star, Daniel Craig's body.
this is a "love da movies!" kinda movie, and this one's about a genuine freak!
"Brits bad". Exhilirating. Lots of John Woo/Hong Kong energy in this (e.g., dual-wielding Lee-Enfields!). While it would have been better with Hollywood production (squibs, live animals, lip syncing that syncs, etc.), this genre (call it "fun action"?) is more or less extinct in the West.
Some disconnected reactions INCLUDING SPOILERS: 1. I’m sorry but that twist is TIRED. No more. 2. This is Oscar bait, and would have worked a lot better in that role if Kamala had won. 3. Great performances, to be sure. 4. LIT TOO DARK. Want to create a moody atmosphere? Your chiaroscuro needs chiaro.
