  Had somehow never seen this one and its queasy existentialism had the same effect on me that it did on Brian Wilson, i.e. I got so freaked out I decided to scrap my experimental pop masterpiece and not watch another movie for twenty years

  Got turned on to a great song (“Evergladed” by Sammy, sounds like early Pavement) via end credits for the first time in forever.

  About halfway through this nuanced and insightful portrait of Small Town USA there is a sequence at a vet’s office that includes a long, close-up shot of a dog’s tail being amputated that is so grizzly and out of nowhere that I have to dock a half star. Otherwise, beautiful picture.
