Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were absolute power houses of the screen in Wicked. Gripping musical numbers mixed with performances filled to the brim with heart and soul made for a very enjoyable watch. I keep hearing about people belly-aching in regards to the runtime but it really blew past; time flies when you’re having fun! Go see Wicked!
Halloween isn’t a contest to see how many on screen deaths a film can have. It’s a master class in suspense and cinematography. This movie was so well done. The huge full shots mixed with the muted palate of the fall make for an almost cozy feeling. And that is immediately offset by the chilling score and glimpses of Michael Myers. I really enjoyed my first watch of Halloween; on Halloween no less!
I was lucky enough to experience this film for the first time on a 16MM print at The Wealthy Theatre in Grand Rapids, MI. There was also a live score done by a local artist. The film itself is a true horror classic but I was surprised by the amount of comedy in Nosferatu. It made the entire audience chuckle and myself included. Nosferatu himself demands presence on the screen. A great grandfather to modern horror.
Perhaps one of the slowest burns in the history of horror; but it absolutely pays off. Every single seed that’s planted from the beginning of the movie stays in the back of your mind as you watch a group of three burst at the seams and slowly degrade into screaming at each other until they have no energy to fight. When the scares hit they hit hard. One of the pioneers to found footage. A classic.
