  Breach 2007

  Supremely underrated, disturbingly topical. Chris Cooper delivers an incredible performance as Robert Hanssen filled with quiet and deep internal shame, regret, disappointment, and resentment- a satisfying foil to Ryan Philippe, but casting Cooper was such a perfect call. Beyond the acting, the music really elevates the movie to a its memorable status. Not surprising the composer also did Shattered Glass, another solid mid-2000s, based-on-true-events corruption (in journalism) movie with a killer soundtrack. In all, this should be required viewing in high school American govt class.

  2001: A Space Odyssey 1968

  ★★★★★ Rewatched 24 Mar 2025

  I’ve seen this movie no less than 20 times but having the privilege this last weekend to witness it on the big screen in 70mm with Kubrick’s original audio/volume, was truly a life-changing experience. The sound will rattle you and stick with you so much longer than watching on a tv screen. It is haunting and beautiful and terrifying and comforting all at the same time. It left me breathless at times, even during scenes I had seen so many times I could quote, it felt like an entirely new film seeing it this way.

  Really shallow and gratuitous, in my opinion. It’s like, I get it. I got it. Yeah, okay. Yep. Uh huh. Felt as if this movie was mansplaining satire to me.
