For the past several years, I've only been able to describe and think of the Christmas season as "depressingly beautiful," and I have been on the hunt for movies that portray the holiday as such. Tangerine has immediately been added to that rather short list and possibly sits at the top. Throughout the film, there are haunting juxtapositions of Christmas idyllicism and daily life realism—so depressingly beautiful that they will be hard to forget.
Lady Bird so delicately and deliciously captures the warmth of my childhood while growing up in Sacramento, parallel to the titular role's coming of age. At the same time, it makes me cringe as it captures the pain of growing up and the pain of strained relationships. When I long for a strange sort of nostalgic comfort or am curious for a peek into my past, I turn to Greta's perfectly crafted Lady Bird. Lady Bird is Greta Gerwig's love letter to Sacramento, and I sign my name to the same letter.
